when i double click to open a folder, a dialogue box appears showing "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing the action. please install a program or if one is already installed, create an association in the default program in the control panel" but the folders are opening when i right click and select the "open" option. normally, when i selected a folder previously, the option "open" used to ahow in the bar at the top of the desktop screen but now it is replaced by "cmd". please help out. am usin windows 7 home premium on a sony vaio laptop.

did you mean opening a file? a folder doesn't need a specific program to open, a file is the one that needs different programs to open. if it is a file, then you need to find the correct program that will open that type of file. you know this by checking the extension of the file, something after the .???, eg. .mp4 for video file, .txt for text file. after noting the extension, you can search the web for the associated program to open it and make the program the default one used to open that file. then windows will know what program to be used directly without asking again.

Hello souvikmajumder

Download and merge the default "folder" associations from here- Default File Type Associations - Restore and reboot see if that fixes it.

It makes no difference its only the associations windows uses to open folders that seems to have been corrupt. If its happening to other users it will likely need doing for each account.
