Save yourself some time quad. Just do a clean install on the laptop and concentrate on the desktop.

You can try a Repair Install to see if it will help but it may pass back through settings that are corrupt.

You should never fear a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 as it's better than getting a new PC since it won't have the bloatware which throttles Win7 native performance. If you follow the steps in the blue link you'll have a perfect install.

You got a SATA/IDE to USB thingamajig? I would just remove the laptop HD temporarily and move over what you need with the thingamajig to your new rig, and then wipe and drop Linux Mint 14 on the laptop and be done in time for cornflakes or whatever OS.

Boot into Safe mode with command prompt.

How to do a system restore using command prompt?

There is another way to restore completely from command line no graphical interface, but I wouldn't recommend it for just any user.
