Cannot make any changes to windows control panel??

I have a brand new kiosk machine installed with windows 7 ultimate 32 bit service pack 1. The machine has keyboad, track ball mouse and also supports single touch input. But the problem is touch screen does not work. There is no touch sensivity at all. Whenever I am trying to caliberate the touch using control panel touch pad setting or pen and touch setting windows prompts "Do you want to make changes to you Computer" and this is the moment mouse and keyboard freezes and I cannot select the "yes". The keys that are working at that time are Ctr+Alt+Del and this how I am coming back to the mainscreen.Even I cannot install or update anyting because keyboard and mouse freezes when windows promts for yes or no. I am trying to figure out is it a hardware(monitor) or software issue. thanks for your suggestions

I think I'd contact the PC manufacturer's Tech Support if included free for the first year. They need to make this work correctly or replace the unit. Either that or the retailer should swap it out and maybe even let you test the new one there first.

If you can boot into Safe Mode and it will let you proceed past the UAC prompt, then you can in Control Panel>User Account, adjust the controls to be more permissive long enough to see if that alone is the problem.

Often times on preinstalled Win7 factory OEM you can tame the bloatware by establishing a Clean Boot as shown in Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7, however you'll want to google each entry you disable to determine which is the touch controls so they are not turned off at Startup. Everything else should be able to be disabled except AV - and I'd be using the lightweight free AV recommended since a bloatware AV is always trouble.

Once you've clawed back some performance from the intrusive OEM Startups, if it still hangs I'd monitor the Task Manager>Processes after enabling the PID column in View tab. See if CPU or RAM is maxing out when you do things, and if so prioritize that column (likely CPU) by clicking on the column head, then watch what PID's are hogging RAM, trace them in Services tab. Report back what you find.

There are more Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 which also explains better how to do the steps recommended.

Go back to exactly where you changed the setting and change it back.

You first said you want into the "Control Panel Monitor settings" which doesn't exist. Where exactly did you make this settings change? Please give us a location that actually exists.

In addition changing monitor settings were not mentioned so may I ask why you did so? You had plenty of suggestions so why just pick something out of thin air to do? If you need help understanding the suggestions I made, all you have to do is ask back.

If you cannot find the setting to change back then boot into System Recovery Options to System Restore to a point. before you made the change.

Actually I used some other monitor and found that there are no monitor setting in control panel. I do not remember where I saw it. All I remember is it was an advanced monitor setting. and there were number of options available like startup, disable, automatic manual etc. I am trying to go to windows startup repair options by pressing F8 but it is not working. I also dont have any previous restore point. seems like screwed myself. Do we any options in bios to fix this thing.

We need to at least know where you made the change. Was it on the monitor itself or in the Win7 Control Panel under Display?

Was System Restore turned off? Try running it from System Recovery Options on Win7 DVD.

Try changing the settings back in the Monitor, or try another monitor.

The only location where the settings choices you mention "startup, disable, automatic manual" all appear is Services.msc but there is no Monitor or even Display service there to choose. You would have to know which Service in order to start it from DVD Command Line.

I don't know of any BIOS setting that can reset a Display setting in Windows that made your display go black. If System Restore won't run I think you'd have to rescue your files from boot mode using the Win7 DVD to Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console and then Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

    Hi,

    Gregrocker,

Finally I found what did I change -

I started the PC in safe mode than -

Control Panel -> Display -> Change Display Setting -> Advanced Settings -> Adapter -> Property->Driver->Startup Type -> than changed Automatic from System, other options available were Boot, Demand and Disable.

Now, If I connect my pc to some other monitor or some other PC to my monitor can I change these settings.

    Thanks for help.....

Those are your Display driver settings not Monitor.

If you can get into Safe Mode then change the setting back.

Otherwise you'd need to rely on a System Restore Point from System Recovery Options , or there's a chance in BIOS setup there will be a setting for your GPU to re-enable it. Comb through every tab to check, but don't change anything else.

I need to ask you one more thing, I want to setup a kiosk machine in our store and I want to distribute magnetic cards to our customers which they can use to login to kiosk machine (Security issues are not a big deal). The kiosk machine has built in card reader. I wanna know can I make users to login to single user account using these magnetic cards (having same info all cards). I am thinking
to write same password on all cards. The objective is only those people can logon who have the card.

    Thanks again
