    Slow bootup on new laptop

    Hello,

I just got a Dell Latitude E6530 with dual 320GB HDDs and am getting slow boot up times of over 90 seconds. I ran CCleaner and it detected the following programs under Startup on the attached jpg:

Is there anything I can get away with disabling here?

    Thanks

All those programs are needed or not any of your problem. Most of them load on my Dell E6420, even the USB3 as I have a USB3 card in my system.

Did you make the Win 7 ISO file from the dell utility. I suggest you wipe the drive and do a clean reinstall of the os and test.

If you still have the slow boot times there may be a hardware problem.

I did a clean install from the Windows 7 OEM disc that was included and reformatted the drive. I then installed the drivers one-by-one, some from the included drivers disk, a couple from Dell's website. The boot up time with all the Dell crapware was worse that before I re-imaged it.

You think it's a hardware problem?

    msconfig

Open msconfig.exe, on the Startup tab disable everything except your antivirus entry. Then on the Services tab, click "Hide Microsoft Services", and disable all the services.

What antivirus program are you using? The ones that have virus, malware and firewall all in one can take a while to load.

Actually I don't have an anti-virus program installed on it yet. This is a perfectly clean install with just the updated drivers and the current Windows 7 updates on it. I haven't even installed Office 2010 yet.

    It's using a Seagate ST320LT007-9ZV142 7200rpm 320GB drive which I'm not terribly impressed with.

If I go into msconfig.exe and untick everything like you say, then the machine won't boot. Right?

If you put a check mark in the box "Hide Microsoft Services", and then disable the services that that remain, it should boot.

Well I did that. I un-ticked everything in the Startup tab. Then went to the Services tab, ticked the "Hide Microsoft Services" first, and then I clicked on the "Disable all" button down on the lower right and re-booted.

Same boot time as before, only now the Services have been re-ticked like before, and the "Hide Microsoft Services" has un-ticked itself like before. It's as if I hadn't made any changes to the Services tab at all.

The programs in the Startup tab remain un-ticked as before.

    What's going on?

It could be the 7 oem disc, does it have any programs installed with it ? Are you sure it`s giving you a bare bones install ? Do you have a COA with an activation key somewhere on the pc and is it readable ?

Nope, no programs on it at all other than the Windows 7 OS and the embedded key that comes with it.

That's also been my experience with other Dells I've owned in the past.

After hiding the Microsoft services, disable the remaining services by clicking on each service, don't click "Disable all".

The computer should boot a little faster, but it won't be anything like having a SSD.
