You see the desktop for a split second after logon... correct?
Check eventlog for errors on that time

Try "system restore" and go back in time prior to date/time when problem started. Can be done in safe mode as well.

I found a windows defender folder in my program file folder on my C drive in safe mode and it said it was turned off. So I turned it on and I ran a scan..it says its a quick scan. But it hasn't been updated for a long time so it didn't find anything.

The Defender that comes with Windows 7 and Defender Off Line are two completely different programs. The Defender that comes with Windows 7 should be turned off if their is any other anti virus on your system.
I really don't know how else to guide you except go back through the instruction in the Tutorial. The Tutorial has worked for thousands and thousands of people.

Update: I created a new user account and after I login and it boots up with a windows explorer window and a black background. If I close this window by doing a ctrl-alt-del then go into task manager...go to file...add new...and type in explorer.exe. my desktop appears. I went to my CD-ROM to see if I could get the windows defender to run by clicking the drive and selecting the mpam-fex64 application. I can hear the drive running but nothing happens. Can anybody please tell me whats going on with this and the explorer.exe. I'm so frustrated.

Sorry for that this is frustrating.

Some of what you put in your last post is very good news. I'll get to that in a minute.

Let's step back and allow me to try to explain some things:

You computer has an operating system; in this case, Windows 7.

Normally, you would wait for the Window 7 operating system to load, then you would sign in. Next you would see a desktop and Start menu. You normally start programs (like Notepad or Internet Explorer) after your Windows 7 operating system has loaded.

WDO (and other programs like it) are not normal. They should not be started after your operating system starts. The good news is: it sounds like you have already done the steps to download & run the WDO installation file. You have already created a CD which contains the mpam-fex64 application.

The CD that you now have contains a different operating system. Our goal is to help you get your computer to boot to the operating system that is on the CD.

Let's forget going into BIOs to make the computer boot from the CD. Let's try a different method.

Take a look at this website
Boot Device Options (F9) | HP® Support

Put the WDO CD into the CD/DVD drive of your laptop.
Turn that laptop off & go for a walk :-)
Once you turn the laptop back on back on - immediately press the Esc key.
Once you see the Startup Menu, press F9.

Hopefully, you will see a screen that looks something like the one shown in the link above.

Use the down arrow to select (highlight) the row for the internal CD drive
Press the enter key.

Sit back and watch the laptop load the operating system from the CD. Once that OS loads, the WDO app will automatically start. It should also automatically start a quick scan. Let it remove whatever it finds (if anything) and then runs a full scan.

You asked what is wrong with your explorer.exe. I do not know, but I concur with the place to start is using a tool like WDO. The reason is: there are types of infections that can hide from your antivirus application. These infections load before the Windows 7 operating system loads so they can hide from most applications that try to detect them. This is why you need a tool like WDO that has its own operating system.

If my long winded post is not clear, don't give up - maybe others have a better way of explaining the steps that you need to take.

Thank you for your response. Your post isn't winded...lol It is informative and very much appreciated! I found a couple anti-viruse malware programs I burt to a dvd and ran them and after rebooting my desktop came up! Yea! I'm running them again and still finding threats detected. It takes a couple hours to run them. I'm going to try your suggestion when these scans are done to see if I find anything else. However, I have a new problem. I cannot connect to the internet. It says my wireless capability is turned off and when I go into turn it on the option button is greyed out and I cannot do anything. Do I need to post to networking for this problem now?

Where are you trying to turn it on?
Is driver listed fine in "device manager"? Goto "network centre" adapter settings. What is state of wireless adapter?
