Finding actual location of icon folder

OS: Windows 7 Professional
Where is the actual location of the file folder containing all the default icons available in Windows 7? The When you right-click on a folder, the 'Properties', the 'Customize', then 'Change Icon', the 'Change Icon for _name_ Folder appears, displaying many icons. The first box you can type in, named "Look for icons in this file:", shows %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll .

I have searched every folder on my computer - opened every single one. The icons are not to be found.

Can anyone tell me how to locate this file?

Thank you.

Welcome to the Seven Forums

Most are in the imageres.dll in both C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64

They are not in a folder. They are images embedded in the SHELL32.dll file. That's where a lot of the default windows ones are. Installed programs may use their own that are embedded in a file that is part of that installed program.

What do you mean by "get to them"? Do you want to extract the icons, edit them, what?

If you want to modify the default icons use the program below

http://www.bome.com/bome/downloads/R...Trial_1747.exe

The other file where icons are stored are in imagesp1.dll inside C:\Windows\System32

An easy way to view them is to right click on a icon on the Desktop and select Properties. Click on the Change Icon button at the bottom. If not already selected, Browse to

%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll and %SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll

You can see all the icons in each dll that way. No program needed to do this.
