    Primary, Extended, Logical

    Hello all,

First, when someone looks at his/her Windows machine's disk management, sees that some drives are primary or extended or logical and so on. What those things mean?

Second, how they should be set up, for a Windows machine?

    Thank you.

Primary are best for OS, Logical are best for data. This way the boot files cannot be derailed to a data partition since Logicals cannot host boot files.

You can have a total of four Primary Partitions, or three Primary and unlimited Logical. To understand better and/or create a Logical use Partition / Extended : Logical Drives - Windows 7 Forums,
or to use an app to do this use Partition Wizard Create Partition Video Help
