need specific help with win7 home

Learning win7 home after yrs on xp Pro. Have following scenario,

Have my pswd required user acct with Admin settings.
Have file and print sharing OFF.
    Not using Homegroups.
Using old WorkGroup with same user accts on both nodes.
Not having any problems with LAN.

=====However when browsing in the window filemanager (explorer)===============

    1. What are the shortcuts I see in some folders that have the same name as the sub folder above them?
    2. What are they for ?
    3. Why when I click on said shortcuts, why do I get an "Access Denied" msg. ? When I can click on the actual folder of the same name they open ok. And the folders have the same access permissioins set (in properties) for my user acct, as the shortcuts ??

    4. Also when I click on this one folder "Documents and Settings" I get "Access denied" on that one folder also, even though it's the only folder I've found that does this. Additionally it also has permissions set to FULL CONTROL for my user acct, so I'm confused as to why it's doing this.
On that note also when I set the full control in properties for this particular folder, it first baulked and said it could not set the permissions as requested. However they are all now checked as set ????

    5. Also I can't find a Task Manager ?? How can I see what's running and also how to stop a frozen browser ?? Surely MS doesn't expect me to just turn the unit off when this happens.

    Appreciate all input.

HomeGroups is so much easier ifyou have other VIsta or later machines. You put in the password, rightclick the User folders or files you want to share, and there's never another minute's bother.

I've found Workgroups cumbersome, even more so if you're trying to knit XPired PC's with WIn7.

But the Documents and Settings and other links you're trying are not folders at all, but junction points to enable certain file system compatibility with XP and older OS's. We have several experts who should be along to explain it better with links.

Rightclick the Task Bar to find the Task Manager. If you're without one, use Control Alt Delete.

There are many other tips and Best Practices developed since Win7 was in beta in the Clean Reinstall tutorial in my sigature pic below. Same for retail.

Ok that's informative and makes sense that it's for file system (by LAN OSs and/or apps) since users are denied access to them. Also was curious why the Documents and Settings was a "folder" and not a shortcut ? I.e. it's the only folder I saw that acted like the shortcuts and absolutely denied access.

Now as for the Taskman I will go try the right click, but my control alt delete already got nuthin, that's why I was confused.

    Try this for Task Manager.
Start Orb and type in Task Manager. Right tick on Task Manager and select to Pin to Task Bar. That makes it very handy if you use it a lot.

    This might help also.
Start Orb and type Folder Options. Open Folder Options and select View and scroll down to/
Show hidden files, folders, drives and make sure the dot is there.

Glad you got that fixed. It will not take you long to figure out little things in Windows 7. If you run into a stumbler just post and we will have a member or members that can help.
    Happy computing.
