Black Screen After BIOS. Windows Will Not Boot Since Update

I've been experiencing a completely black screen after my BIOS loads. A Windows update hit my computer last night and since then, the OS completely fails to boot.

Both hard drives (system volume and storage) are present and accounted for in the BIOS.

I tried Startup Repair by booting with my Windows disc, but it detected no problems and told me that my OS boots perfectly. Also tried some method I found on a forum saying Startup Repair must be run three times, but I got the same result each time.

Next step was System Restore. I have tried restoring from several different restore points, but I get an error message each time. Something vague, along the lines of "System Restore has failed." This is pretty worrying.

I tried to "upgrade" my Windows installation from the disc, but the next screen said to restart, then boot into the OS, then "restart the upgrade." No use to me since I can't boot my OS at all.

Anything to do with Safe Mode isn't an option either, since there is absolutely nothing happening after my BIOS loads up. Just a completely black screen. No Windows logo. No blinking cursor. Nothing.

All I can think of now is backing up my personal files and reformatting/reinstalling Windows from scratch, but I really, really do not want to do that. Any help would be much appreciated!

EDIT: Forgot to mention, my computer has always had a habit of crashing/BSODing at the most inopportune times due to some crappy music hardware I own. Not really related to this problem, but the only cause I can think of is that my computer crashed when the update was installing. I just shut it down and went out last night, leaving the update to finish installing and turn the computer off by itself, so I didn't see what happened.

Specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Asus mobo (I forget the model. Can check if it's necessary.)
CPU: AMD Phenom II 965 Black
GPU: Asus ENGTX460 TOP

Having a similar issue with both my desktop and laptop which have nothing else in common. Windows won't load and neither system repair nor system restore seem to work. I'll update if I figure something out.

this is a good guide for undoing those updates :
Windows Update - Uninstall an Update

but in case you cannot enter windows even trough safe mode, i think there's a way that's not a convenient one but still possible to do. you can put another internal hard drive loaded with a good windows installation inside the pc, boot through that drive successfully then when already inside windows, do the above link. or just the same you can ask a friend's help and put the unbootable drive inside his pc.
