Start menu not opening and all icons and picture previews missing

ALL of my icons are gone; even my picture previews are gone. And the start menu won't open.

I have:
  • Rebooted several times
  • Updated everything possible
  • Scanned for viruses and didn't find any
  • Rebooted from Safe Mode
  • Restored to several different points
  • Showed and then hide file extensions
  • Yelled and screamed and cried

Everything still works and I have not lost anything that I can tell. I have searched the web multiple times and have tried everything that I have found, but nothing has worked. Is there anything that perhaps I haven't tried?

Thanks!

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Please try this scan...
What is Windows Defender Offline?
...since a number of infections can hide from traditional antivirus/anti-malware software.

When you say the the start menu will not open - do you see an empty start menu or absolutely nothing happens when you click on the Start orb/button?

If you think a screenshot will help convey info to us - here is how to upload them as inline images or just attachments:

The start menu does not do anything when I click on it. I don't think a screenshot would help since it is not doing anything and the icons are just missing.

I will try the Windows Defender though. I'll let you know how that works. Thanks!
