How do you open file000.chk and dir000.chk files and folders

I have just completed running a cmd.exe on my external hard disk drives and I have the case that I have the following:

    1. My desktop has FILE000.CHK files on it.

    2. My external disk drive (Seagate 1TB) has FILE.000 folder with one file called File0000.chk in it.

    3. My Flash disk has dir000.chk folders on it.

I am a beginner and I am finding it hard to operate the following:

I have enclosed the results of what the above look like - I just wish to know if it I can gain some easy guide on how to use the .exe software or is it worth just deleting the information.

That is what I was looking at first - 7 Ways To Recover CHK Files Created by CHKDSK and SCANDISK

Most of them I have uploaded and they are zip files. They are quite hard for me to try and navigate. I am not too sure if I am going to be able to retrieve any data.

I also found this- Recover CHK Files

I have a lot of zip files and .exe files on my desktop. I also have some directories or folders that may have been deleted - unsure what extension that would go under.

Thanks for your assistance. I am very weary of third party software as you do not know what you are picking up.

Hi Melissa, The NPE.exe file is Norton power eraser, Unchk.exe is a utility for reading .chk files just drag and drop any .chk file onto it and it will attempt to start recovery of said file :)

Only in the certain formats. Thanks for your assistance.

I could only do a snip of the application extension. Thanks for answering.

Hi Meluissa , In my experience with .chk files I have found that it is best to just delete them. Most times the file is so badly fragmented that recovery is not possible Do you actually use the Norton Power Eraser ? or was it just a proggy you downloaded to see if it would help in this case ?:)

    2. My external disk drive (Seagate 1TB) has FILE.000 folder with one file called File0000.chk in it.

    3. My Flash disk has dir000.chk folders on it.

Assume drive letters of those disks are F and G. In Elevated Command Prompt

    Code:
    chkdsk/f F:
    chkdsk/f G:
If volume is in use DON'T force a volume dismount so say: N
    Check disk on reboot: Y

This will make the disks healthy again.

No in the screen snip you would perhaps only see a little bit of what I downloaded - The applications are -

    ChK-Mate_Setup.Exe
    FileCHK.Exe
    UnChk.exe

    Also have unchk.ini

I also have from those .exe and some websites

    FileCHK.zip
    source.zip
    unchk3.zip

I always do try and use remove the hardware safely - even to the extent of powering off the computer.

I have posted on here about the issue where I can not remove my external devices correctly.

That is why I have the USB Disk Ejector zip folder in the snip that I posted

    Thanks again people

Well I found out the hard way. After uploading and one of the programs scanning the devices - the association has changed my .chk files - how do I get this back on my System.

I think it is in file associate I now have filescout.exe that is trying to open everything.

Last time I trust third party freeware stuff for a while
