Scannow errors that can't be repaired

Attachment 274846 I ran sfc /scannow today and there were some files that were erred and couldn't be repaired. Whenever I ran that before it always repaired so this is kind of new for me. The reason this is bothering me is I installed some folder icons that were custom and they installed OK and all, but I went to uninstall them and ended up with half of them still installed. Not to mention I have been having a few hiccups with my system doing some freezing and I went through a whole battery of Memory Tests and malware scans with it all coming up good except for this sfc scan and I don't know how or what I should do about these corrupt files, short of re-formatting and I don't want to do that unless absolutely necessary. I can attach the log. As a matter of fact I will try and copy the part of the log that the files that couldn't be repaired are in, so you can take a look and tell me how to proceed. The attached log starts at 18:35 hrs. at the top of the log just in case there is more than 1.
Also, in case these aren't in the log my imageres.dll in both sysWOW and sys32 is corrupt icon when I opened it in restorator, Same with imagesp1.dll when I opened it in Restorator it also said corrupt icon in the left side tree under "Icon"

If you have the installation disk you can try this tutorial: Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD

It is related to this tutorial: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker, and listed at the bottom

I don't have the Win 7 install disk. It came with Win 7 Home Premium on it. It's an Acer 8943g x64 so it has the recovery partition on it and I could reinstall it without even using disks. It also has the recovery without loosing all my files. Still doesn't give me a disk does it? A repair disk any good? I guess you know I am just trying to make this as painless as possible. Did you look to see how many corrupted files or un-repairable files I had?

No that wouldn't get you a new disk. A repair is possible, how many times did you run the SFC scan, Did you read the tutorial?

       Note

    • If SFC could not fix something, then run the command again to see if it may be able to the next time. Sometimes it may take running the sfc /scannow command 3 or more times to completely fix everything that it's able to.

    • If still not, then you can attempt to run a System Restore using a restore point dated before the bad file occured to fix it. You may need to repeat doing a System Restore until you find a older restore point that may work.

    • If still not, then you can use the steps in the TIP box in the OPTION THREE section below to manually replace the files that SFC could not fix.

You should restart in between each run of the scan.

I came up with 32 still corrupted files. There were 250/300 failures/warnings, I lost count.

If you haven't had your machine for long or even if you have, you may have to cut your losses and run the Acer recovery program.

Well, I reformatted and at this time right now I'm about half way to having it the way I want it. Programs, Updates and all. did give your last suggestion a try and ran the scan after it and it was still the same. When you lost track of counting the errors i almost crapped. The only thing I was counting were the ones that couldn't e repaired so when I got that huge number I was like WOW!! I need to learn how to read a log obviously, but I do want to thank you for your time. I really hate doing re-formatting. Pain in the keester to be sure.

The problem could be with the inferior Factory Preinstalled Win7 with all of the bloatware and duplicate utiltiies which have better versions built into Win7. These throttle Win7 from its native performance and can cause problems.

That's why most tech enthusiasts will not run such an install but instead Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. Everything is provided in the blue link tutorial.

At the minimum I'd Clean Up Factory Bloatware.

If this doesn't resolve performance problems, work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

The solution when SFC cannot repair files is to run a Repair Install which is almost as much work as doing the Clean Reinstall and with a factory Win7 install is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

I got aa question regarding something I may have missed and I'm sure you have the answer. When I first started this you said that if I had a Windows 7 HP install disk I would've been OK to try and get the files I needed off of said disk. Correct? When I had Vista many moons ago Windows 7 came out and I wanted that so I went and bought an upgrade disk. It had a x32 and a x64 upgrade disk in the package. Would the upgrade disk have worked for what I wanted? If so I will kick myself for not exploring that possibility before I went and reformatted. I'm not bummed that my computer runs like a champ now, but I would like to know that I explored all other possibilities before I did the deed.

SFC is designed to replace any damaged files itself so extracting files is a Manual last-resort, and IMO it rarely works.

What does often work if SFC reports damaged files it can't repair is running it repeatedly, running it from boot SFC /SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot, and then if necessary and possible running a Repair Install which is an in-place reinstall which keeps all programs, files and settings.

But there is no comparison to the efficacy of getting a Clean Reinstall which offers the opportunity to get a perfect install better than 90% of all other users have, if you follow the steps closely in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which are the same for retail.

It could be possible, but I would have to side with gregrocker on this one.

What you could try is practice extracting files to see if you can try it next time something like this happens again. Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD

Thank you for marking your thread solved!

Back to the clean install for a minute. If I were to buy a new windows 7 ultimate disk and install that, would it be the same as doing a clean install with the .iso from the site you linked. Would I just install it right over top of what I have right now? How about the drivers. Could I use lets say double driver backup and reinstall from that once the install was finished. I have a 100 gb Data partition right now tht I would really like to keep. Would that be gone on a clean install from either thing I mentioned? One of the .iso's that you linked or a clean install from a new win 7 Pro or Ultimate disc. I would really hate to lose the data partition if I didn't have to. It has a wealth of info on it. Is this screenshot of the .iso what I would use if I were to do it with my key right now instead of Ultimate or Pro?
