Have you already tried rolling out the previous version of the Nvidia driver as Lehnerus suggested?

Maybe also try and consider a full malware scan if you haven't done so.

Oops missed the post mate yes but back up very first thing the reg the lot then those drivers at least with the back up you will have the system on tap as it were if things go bung again.

Another thing you can do too if you want more out of the system and don't mind losing some of the "bling" like transparency is this
Optimize Windows 7

PS Personally if it were me I would do a clone to a spare drive but that is just me

Check the Services tab at msconfig and make sure Avast is checked in there.

Typing services on the Start menu shows Services (the one with the gear icon)

You can use that to start stopped or disabled services or change their startup type to Automatic, Manual or Disabled that you can't on msconfig.

This is looking more like a serious malware infection than a problem with the Nvidia driver, judging by the symptoms.

Open regedit by typing it on the Start Menu and selecting it. Once there, go to File and Export and save it on a location you can remember and name it with anything you want. This should backup the whole Registry. You would then have to open that file if you want to restore the Registry backup. You can also use a free program called Erunt to do this.

Sorry late reply tikkari I see vertex has fixed you up so no problem with the back up. If you need to change anything in the registry and I don't recommend that unless you feel competent enough you will need to run is as the admin

In that Optimise tutorial it will show you how to do that anyway
