RAM idles at around 25-30% with a Firefox and a few small apps on.
I install a PC game and RAM goes up to 80% usage. The problem is, the RAM usage stays that high (around 80%) even after the installation is finished.
This has happened every time I install a game. Installing normal programs don't do that though.
Wondering why it's like that.
Your RAM idle is normal.
How are you installing the games? ie by disc or by mounting them?
Depending on how much total ram you have installed, it's most likely various windows services still working away in the background. Given enough time, it should return to normal.
this happens to me as well. I wait a while and the ram usage comes back to normal, but my pc still feels slow and unresponsive. My only option is to reboot.
Sorry for the slight gravedig, but has there not been any fix for this? It's extremely irritating that Windows 7 would utilize RAM this way. I have 6 GB of RAM, and it's stuck at 85% usage after I installed a game. I've been told that "Windows 7 holds those items in the cache in case you require them again, but as soon as you run another program, it overwrites that part of the cache so you can have the required RAM ready." I don't believe that at all. So any fix or no?
Believe it because it's true.
There is no fix because there is nothing wrong with Windows. If you truly have a problem, then it is from something(s) you installed that should not have been. And at 85% of 6 GB, I'd say there is.
One thing that comes to mind immediately is AVG. There are plenty other "things."
If you want me to take a look, type system information in the start menu search box. Hit enter. Ctrl+s. Rar or zip the saved file and attach to a post using the paperclip.
Use the task manager if you need to end the game installer processes after it installs. It could be hanging.
It does this on a fresh install also. I did a completely fresh install of Windows 7, installed a game, and the RAM usage stayed around 80%. I run other things, and they run extremely slow. I can't run the game, because it doesn't have enough RAM to make it even work. There is something wrong with Windows 7 if it does this.

A strange thing is that the RAM usage doesn't even show up anywhere, it's like it's not part of some (visible) process. So I don't know about it, I stopped the entire Anti-Virus (Avast!) but no luck in decreasing RAM usage. The thing I don't get, is that when I stop any other process or program, the RAM is givin right back to me.
You have a lot of what I call "nonsense" starting with Windows. Let's get rid of it.
Start menu | all programs | startup folder. Delete:
Google Update
Everest
In the start menu, type Regedit, hit enter. Navigate to
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and delete
Ashampoo Core Tuner
LogMeIn GUI
XboxStat
Go back to the start menu search box. Type services.msc and hit enter.
Disable:
Andrea ADI Filter Service

Google or search this site for how to completely uninstall the Bonjour service for x64. You don't want that on your pc.
Reboot.
Finally, your Avast may be causing you issues. So completely uninstall that to test. Disabling will have no effect.
Follow what I'm saying and you will be problem free with a nice tweaked machine.
Well, doing that kept it lower, but now it's lugging around at 50%. But it works a lot better and isn't slowing down my PC, which is plenty enough for me. :) Thank you very much. I should have removed a lot of those startup programs to begin with to help speed up everything. Thank you.
