Windows 7: Very variable startup speed

Very variable startup speed

Hi,

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on a 1.8 Tb Hard Drive of which only 500 gb is formatted.

I bought the PC from Aria in Manchester, UK in May.

Computer has 16 Gb RAM.

As far as I know the drivers etc. and Windows updates are all up to date.

The think I noticed as soon as I got the PC is that the fan makes a lot of noise, and sometimes, maybe when it is working harder, the fan makes even more noise.

Anyway, when I turn on the PC, often it takes about 2 or 3 minutes to get to the login screen, from which I can get into Windows.

This morning it took about 30 seconds, it was very fast. It is rarely this fast though.

The HDD is not very full (67 Gb used out of 500). I don't use the PC for much other than email and playing Minecraft.

I can't work out why most of the time it starts up pretty slowly (much slower than when I had XP on it), and sometimes it starts up very fast, like this morning.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Hello and welcome 201 mate am just a tad confused as to why the HDD is only formatted to 500GB??

You could try this SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

then this Disk Check

for starters then

Optimize Windows 7[2]=Performance Maintenance

Personally I don't like large drives and I think you would be better off with a SSD for the boot and use the big drive for the Users files.

If the fan is running real fast usually means something is getting hotter tyr running this and let us know what the temps are Speccy - Download

The large amount of RAM also makes it a suspect. Test your RAM - Test with Memtest86+
for 5-6 passes or overnight. Then remove a stick or two to see if the problem goes away. Then swap sticks to check again.

If RAM absolves itself then make sure you have a Clean Boot, check the logs and System Resources, test your HD and the other Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

Compare the install you have the perfect install provided in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 as the full native performance of Windows 7 is only guaranteed with a perfect install which is worth investing in if there's any question.

Otherwise you can trace with certainty what's happening at Startup by Gathering a Startup, Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, or Reboot Trace - Windows 7 Forums

As a quick check go into msconfig and enable boot logging. See if there's any correlation between slow boots and time outs waiting for drivers to load.
