Help with windows 7 laptop freeze and os errors?

I am not by any means computer savvy, but I am trying to help my fiancé. We have the exact same laptops, Compaq Presario with windows 7, we bought them on clearance last year right after windows 8 came out. Mine is working fine but 3 days ago his began to act up. Freezing and lagging badly. It is currently showing this screen, Windows boot manager, please choose and operating system. It will not allow movement to make a selection. It only shows windows 7 as an option, however we can not choose it. This is the second time this has happened, he was able to recover the system somehow and had it working fine for a day, but then the computer bagan doing the same thing last night? Any ideas? Please and Thank You!

The problem could be inferior Factory Preinstalled Win7 with all of the bloatware and duplicate utiltiies which have better versions built into Win7. These throttle Win7 from its native performance and can cause problems.

That's why most tech enthusiasts will not run such an install but instead Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. Everything is provided in the blue link tutorial.

At the minimum I'd Clean Up Factory Bloatware.

If this doesn't resolve performance problems, work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 including the hardware tests.

I can not actually get the computer off of the Windows boot manager screen, removing battery, powering off ect... do not work. Looks like I will either be getting a new laptop or paying a professional a butt load of money in the near future. poo.

Did you want to try to troubleshoot this with us? We do these things.

First reset the BIOS to defaults: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

If it still won't boot a disk provided in Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start then test the RAM - Test with Memtest86+ for 5-6 passes or overnight. Remove a RAM stick to check what happens, then change to the other one.

Next test your HD with maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan.
