Computer does not start up automatically upon opening the lid

    Hello,

I own an Alienware m17x R3 laptop. Recently, aside from the occasional BSOD, it had no problems whatsoever.

Generally when I am away from my laptop, I close the lid and nothing else. In the past, when I had opened the lid up the PC automatically started up screen and all. Now, however, the screen stays black despite the lights being on (Touchpad, power button, etc.) In order to start it up, I have to press the power button to shut it off, then turn it back on entirely.

Any suggestions on what may be causing this or ways to work around it? I checked my power options and currently, it is still set to be in "Sleep" mode once I close the lid.

Try Hibernate which is a deeper sleep but still resumes more quickly.

Does sleep time out correctly according to the times you've set in Power Options? Will it wake up correctly then?

If not work through these steps for Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems

Chief amongst these is to update your Display driver.

I will try setting it to hibernate. If I get any issues from that, I will then attempt to follow the thread you posted.

    Many thanks gregrocker!

Hibernate has been working out great, and if not, I do have the link you have posted to update drivers. Thanks again gregrocker!

You're welcome. I also love Hibernate. But remember to Shut Down occasionally to clear your system, too. I always check to see if Updates are cued on the Shutdown button.

Yeah, I shut my computer off whenever I go to sleep just to be safe in terms of performance.

I like the fast start up with Hibernate enough that I only shut down if Updates are cued on the startup button, or maybe once a week.
