Setting up a new installation of 64 bit Windows 7 Professional SP1

I have just installed the above evrsion of windows 7 onmy laptop after three days of hassle getting SP1 installed.
I wanted to get Windows Explorer to open D:\ when it starts and I also wanted to get rid of Favorites from the left-hand panel when it opens.
To make it start on drive D:, I right-clicked on the icon on the task bar, then right-clicked on 'Windows Explorer and the selected properties. I the "Target" box I put:
The result was - nothing had changed.Code:%windir%\explorer.exe /n, /e, /select, D:\
Next, I tried to remove "Favorites" from the navigation pane by following the method that was published by Brink on 15th November 2009. This involved editing a registry key. However, although I am, at the moment, the only user of this machine and have, apparently, Administrator privileges, I was unable to edit the key as I got "Access Denied" The key in question is:
If anyone can help, I would be very grateful. Ideally, i woud like to click on the windows Explorer icon and get the left hand panel displaying just C: and D: with D: open and expanded. Asking for the moon, I am beginning to think!Code:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{323CA680-C24D-4099-B94D-446DD2D7249E}\ShellFolder
