Windows 7: Windows Explorer Doesn't See Server

Windows Explorer Doesn't See Server

I'm using W7-pro-64 and have WHS installed. I want to drag files to the server. I can connect to the server with WHS with no problem. However, in Windows Explorer the server does not show up under Network (left window). In the right window it shows up under media connect devices. Under Other Devices the server shows, but if you double click it takes you to net site. Typing //servername/ in the address bar takes me to a web site. User Access is set properly in WHS.

Any suggestions of how I can drag files to the server.

Thanks

Have you checked your "Change advanced sharing settings" (in the "Network and Sharing Center")?

Have you tried typing the IP address instead of the server name?
Instead of:
\\ServerName
try:
\\192.168.1.67
Obviously use your server address (instead of the one above).

Thanks, using the IP address worked. Still don't understand why it doesn't automatically show, but now I can get my work done.

Hosts File

If "Network discovery" is not turned on, Windows Explorer won't automatically show other network devices.

You could add your server IP address and ServerName to your "hosts" file.

If your ServerName was "blah.com" and the server IP address was "127.0.0.1", you would include it in the "hosts" file as highlighted in the picture (above).
If you use your server IP address and ServerName you should be able to use \\ServerName.

You can find the hosts file here:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
Note:
The picture above actually shows how to block "blah.com" by redirecting it to your own PC (IP address = 127.0.0.1), instead of letting the DNS service return an actual web address.
