Windows Boot Manager - Status: OxcOOOOOe9 Unexpected I/O error

    Hi Guys
    Hope someone can help please...
Was trying to clean up friends ADVENT QUANTUM 200 Laptop (2Gb RAM/250 Gb HD win 7 Home Basic 32 Bit).
    Removed Norton AV and restarted.
    Ran Ccleaner and restarted.
Ran MBAM (Malwarebytes) and found 8 suspect items.
    Rebooted.
All was fine and system was running quicker than before.
Then just as I was unplugging mains electrical supply I noticed a number of Win updates that needed to be applied, so I left laptop on table to install new software updates and shutdown.
On returning from work this evening I booted laptop to find:

    WINDOWS BOOT MANAGER

    File: \Boot\BCD

    Status: OxcOOOOOe9

Info: An unexpected I/O error has occurred.

I cannot access Windows at all...a black screen just appears and the two choices it gives: ESCAPE=exit or ENTER=Continue, just returns me to the same screen after a few seconds.

I have tried continually pressing f8 on bootup, pressing f8 once etc - No change

    Any suggestions please.
    Many thanks

Do know what the suspect items were?

Is the HD detected in BIOS? If so work through the steps in tutorial Blue Robot linked, disinfecting in Safe Mode or from boot first, then checking System Files, confirming Active partition, running Startup Repair repeatedly. Report back results.
