All desktop icons changed to Notepad style

I'm connected to a friend's laptop whose son's account shows almost all of the desktop icons for programs (TeamVIewer, Chrome, MBAM, etc) and other with a Notepad icon.

The son says he remembers being asked a question to which he answered Notepad resulting in all the icons changing. This was several months ago so System Restore is out of reach as a solution.

Does anyone recognize this or see a way to change them back to their defaults?

I tried one for Chrome and it actually showed a Chrome icon logo to choose in Change Icon, but wouldn't take it when I tried to apply it.

Thanks!

Greg is their a 3rd party program that could be causing this problem?

When I reconnect tomorrow I'll try Rebuilding Icon Cache. Google found me Shawn's tutorial: Icon Cache - Rebuild - Windows 7 Help Forums

Since he admitted he clicked something associating them with Notepad my first thought is he re-associated the .exe but these are only shortcuts and not the actual .exe - and some are internet shortcuts.

There was a lot of spyware on the Admin account which I cleaned up with no obvious remaining issues. Only the kid's account had the desktop shortcuts' icon format changed.

I'll ask him again to pinpoint when it happened to double-check System Restore points.

Shortcuts are .lnk, maybe restoring that from here will change them back,

Thanks, Derek.

I wonder if it makes a difference how it's sequenced: Rebuilding Icon Cache or Restoring .lnk File Associations first?

I would try restoring the .lnk first, you may not need to rebuild the icon cache after the log off or restart.

Size of certain icons changed when installing visual style
Hi, I was changing visual styles the other day, and one visual style resized these icons as can be seen in the image below (the ones identified by the pink lines). Changing visual styles again did not change them back to their normal size, and I wasn't able to find anything in the Advanced...

Navigation Icons style on Nightly changed.
I have been using Nightly since V8.0. All of a sudden my "Navigation Toolbar Icons" style changed on "Nightly V14.0a1". They used to look exactly as the ones displayed in Firefox V11.0. This occurred before a nightly update. Compared the about:config's between Firefox and Nightly, reverted to an...

Link style icons only on desktop?
I would like to know if I can apply the folder option for single clicking to open only to the desktop. I would like to leave other folders the traditional way. I realize the most likely answer is no, its either one way or the other, but I would appreciate a definitive answer. Thanks in advance.

Desktop Icons Changed!?
Hello, Restarted and Windows 7 desktop icons are now partially obscured by what looks to be some kind of 'preview' page, or something (small page-like display at lower left corner of icon with a dog-ear on the top right). What happened and how do I get rid of these...it's annoying the %$#@*...

Desktop Icons changed to Default
I just booted my computer and it seems that IE8 icon and the MS Security Essentials icon went to a default icon. Have no idea why. Scanned for virus and malware. All clean. I had to select another icon other than the original then back to the original to get them back to normal. I know about F5...

desktop icons suddenly changed colors
I seem to have done something that screwed up my Win 7 RC slightly, but I have no idea what it was. All of a sudden, the icons on the desktop (more precisely, icons for links, not actual files) change their colors at the last stage of the boot up. What I mean is that after I type in my password the...
