How do I become an expert in Windows?

    Hi

Although I'm specializing in Computer Science I sometimes come to problems that I can't solve in Windows and many times people ask me question about windows that I can't answer.

Now I decided to become expert in Windows Vista, 7 and 8.

What should I do? Are there any books recommended?

    Cheers.

Honestly, without knowing where you are, the only thing I would suggest is looking into courses offered at a local college. My local Community College offers all sorts of classes with regards to Windows operation and such. The next thing is to look into taking a course recommended here: MS Learning Overview . You may come out of these courses and find yourself knowing the answers to a lot more questions. Of course, that depends on the type of questions you're receiving.

I had the opportunity to learn about the workings of Windows from having Windows on my computers since Windows 2 was intro'd to the public. It was "learning the hard way", but it was a challenge that I like to think I met.

I dunno. I like certs. They got me a few jobs. If the guy is studying Computer Science, he's prolly going to want the certs sooner or later, anyway.

I don't like the certs because windows is improving and my cert will be old one day. I actually got some certs in programming but I just want to be more expert in Windows!

Understand that certs can expire, and to keep them, you have to take some refreshers that will keep you up to date. I hope you find what you want. Remember, the internet is HUGE and there are probably thousands of places, like this forum, that can help you achieve some semblance of expertise. Good luck.

That's how I did it. I didn't learn a whole lot in the certs courses, I just had to show up. I've let mine expire long ago, but thru T&E, I believe I'm as up-to-date as I need. I've long ago retired from the support role, and only have my home sys/network to worry about these days.

Start with reading through the Tutorials and browsing the threads here which interest you, or to find what interests you. You are always welcome to ask questions as that's how everyone learns. Then you may find yourself offering advice.

This is how as an installer hobbyist I got involved here during beta, so relieved to see that Vista was being replaced with a first rate OS. I was able to learn something new every day, at a time when many of the installation and repair protocols and workarounds were being developed here, most of which became the Best Practices of the OS.

Since Windows 8 is a complete flop with consumers and the business world decided to migrate nearly entirely into Win7, we will have our work cut out here for many years to come. When Win7 finally has a worthy successor you will hear about it first here.

Learning and helping here will assure you get the best education since we have best talent and traffic of all of the other help sites combined. But I'd browse them all anyway to see if you find a better fit. I couldn't. Trying to help at the MS Forums, for example, was like trying to drive a kiddy car compared to the features we have here.

To be honest, you cannot become a "expert" in windows. No one can. There is way to many things to know.
Like I always say, there is always someone that will know more then you. It's your willingness to learn what others know that will give you a sense of accomplishment. But You cannot become an expert in it in IMHO.

Having said that though, there is no shame in trying :)

    Good luck.
