I'd recommend DVD's but you can do it with your external, just they tend to become write protected in the process, not all, but some. Or if you have an extra USB flash drive that would be better. The easiest way to back up your files is to copy your whole user account to your external harddrive from C:\Users\(>Your User Account<) :)

for a clean install and the other questions, I'll leave to greg :)

Don´t skip over the necessary preparations unless you´re sure you don´t need them since these compile everything that anyone has ever forgotten to great dismay.

The other tips are what we´ve found work best since before Win7 was even released, so I´d study them all out and adapt what you like.

Again, during the installation following the illustrated steps delete all partitions and create new as you wish, or just click Next and the installer will do it for you.

yes, and no. but the actual install varies. Greg will probably guide you thru all the steps suggesting he's the expert in that. if you follow the clean install tutorial, your Computer will the as fast as you can make it. Update your system specs and I'll give you an estimate :)
and yessir greg, I'll guide him thru the steps (if he needs help) after rougekiller :)
