Windows 7: Windows 7 Explorer stops working

Windows 7 Explorer stops working

Most of the time when I right click on a folder either in C: or F: which is a Seagate aux drive, Explorer stops working (drop down window message "Windows Explorer stopped working" and next message "W Explorer restarts"). I have to start Explorer again from the Taskbar. It means that I do not get a context window with "Delete", "Rename" or even "Properties" etc on it's menu.

Now, other threads in this forum, or a large search on Internet, did not give any explanation. This is a particular case of WE stopped working, and despite there are lots of infos on right click of context menus even with WE, they don't address this special case. I investigated the registry as well, the best I found references to some utilities, but those all say that I should delete certain registry items one by one and see what helps. I believe this approach is most dangerous and I don't like to mess with the registry.
Any ideas? Thanks.

I've never owned a laptop but I'm wondering if the C: drive could be in power saver mode. I'm thinking if there's a lag between right clicking on a drive, and the drive being spun up to respond, Explorer might crap out. If there's a method to set the C: to always be spun up, as a diagnostic.. I would advise setting it this way. If Explorer acts normally for C: in that case, you might be on track toward a solution. If not, then we can rule out that theory.

Filling this out, at least partially, will save a lot of time. Another advantage is when posting a new problem, the person answering can just click the My System Specs link in the bottom of your post. No need to search for the information.

Go to thissite and download the portable version of ccleaner and scan your registry, when it prompts you to backup your registry (Thanks to ICit2lol i remembered this time!) do it, then clean all items, this usually fixes context menu or right click problems in my experience

MilesAhead. It is a PC not a laptop.
Sony VAIO VPCL216FX/B, Intel Core i7 2.00 Ghz, 6.00 GB RAM, 64 bit. I filled out the System Specs.
Windows 7 Pro
The "lag" theory does not work, I tried right clicking anyway imaginable.
Redfang: I used ccleaners and registry scanners (Microsoft and others) Didn't help. By the way, I could not go to your "this" site, (Server not found) while I was on the Internet.

It would be more helpful if you filled in the System Specs. That way there's a link in every post rather than expecting people to search for this post when you ask for help on another issue. That's why it's there. I'd know if it was a PC or a laptop if you filled in the specs.

On the advise of EMH on 2011-06-13 on a similar thread (info CSI00000301(SR) I went to Search>eventvwr>log>application tab and found many "faultings" of the same origin, obviously one for each occasion when Exlorer stopped working, one of them:
Faulting application name Explorer.exe version 6.1.7601.1767
Time stamp 0x4d67ee4
Faulting module name SHELL32.dll, version 6.1.7601.18103 stamp 0x512d9f39
Exception code 0xc0000005
Event ID 1000 Task category (100)
Level: error, keyword classic User N/A
So, are these relevant? I am not a geek, far from it, so for me these are gibberish. And who and how can change-correct these so the fault will not appear again. By the way, I am running 64 bit, the above Shell reference is 32.
