Great news Coastalwave. I'm glad to hear you got it sorted.

The lnk download from below would have deleted that same key though, so not sure why it didn't work for you as well.

I think since you are merging the reg data with the above link it doesn't delete other subkeys, it just overwrites if the data is already there and leaves other keys and subkeys alone.

xunile,

Nope, it deletes them first, then adds the default values.

Here's the part of the lnk download that deletes that part with the "userchoice", then addes the defauly values.

Code:
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.lnk]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.lnk\OpenWithProgids]
"lnkfile"=hex(0):
The only thing I can think of is that not all of the prompts from step 4 were approved to fully merge the .reg file for the lnk download.

I really don't think it deletes subkeys that aren't implicitly referenced. I could be wrong. I just did an experiment. I found a key in my registry with the userchoice subkey. I then exported it. I removed the line with userchoice in it and resaved it with a different name. It now had no reference to the "userchoice" subkey. I then merged it with the registry. When I went back and looked at the key, the "userchoice" was still there.

Nar, the first line would delete the .lnk key and all it's subkeys that includes "userchoice".
