    desktop shaded mode

    hi there,

i am just asking if anyone knows how to turn off the annoying little thing that happens when you mouse drag a window to the top of your desktop, when you do this the screen goes to shaded mode and the window you have dragged up there maximizes. which is very counter productive.. many thanks.

i am also trying to lower my ram useage as at the moment @ idle its 1.6GB where as my vista ultimate 32 runs @ 850MB even though i have 8GB of ram i think this is still too high. i have turned off indexing/search and aero and pen input is there anything else i can turn off ?

Just turn off the whole computer, no more RAM usage. (I am being serious, BTW.)

    @ LogicEarth!

But seriously, I wouldn't fret over this issue.

Question: Are you using Windows 7 x64 at the moment? If you are, then you are utilising about 20% of your total memory of 8GB, as opposed to the 27% usage you had with Windows Vista 32-Bit.

If you are using a 32-Bit Windows 7, then you have a problem because your usage would be 53%, which sounds about right for a machine with 4GB. Yes, I say again, 53%, which is just over half you memory. If you are still using 32-Bit Windows, then you have 4GB of memory sitting there doing nothing, and unable to be used.

32-Bit operating systems CANNOT address more than 4GB of memory, and in most cases are internally limited to 3GB or so (as was the case with Windows XP and Vista 32 Bit).

If you want to be able to use all 8GB of memory, then you have to alternative but to install Windows Vista x64 or Windows 7 x64. If, for whatever reason you cannot (drivers, perhaps?), then remove the unused 4GB of memory and sell it to one of your friends.

One other thing: You've actually hurt your system performance by turning off Aero. Aero uses the graphics acceleration hardware of your graphics card, freeing the CPU to do other tasks. With Aero off, your main CPU is doing all the graphics work, with minimal involvment from you graphics card.

Yet it doesn't matter how much RAM is used with an out-of-box installation. Everything installed by default, or running by default when you install Windows is a good citizen. All the background task are low priority. If they are in the middle of an I/O operation, they are designed to stop and give it up instantly. Same with RAM, first thing pushed out of RAM.

RAM usage does not equate to poor performance. It is in fact the other way. Not using RAM means the computer needs to go to the HDD, you know how slow that is.

With Windows Vista and Windows 7, there is no need to disable services, or mess with anything of that nature. It might have been the case with Windows XP...but this is not XP now is it?

Probably cause he turned off Aero so he shouldn't be getting Aero Snap in the first place...at least I think so?

so the shading problem is called aero snap? what is trolling? i have a dual boot machine on one disc is vista 32 and on another disc windows 7 64 and i have 8GB of ram on a fresh install of both os is 860mbs for vista and 1.67 gbs for windows 7 which is double. I always find that these os is full of bloated "automatic" processes which i never need or want as i use my computer as a workstation not to spend hours on face tube.

so how do you turn off this shaded desktop problem?

    thanks

    edit:

never mind found it can disable this in the ease of access section of the control panel

If you want to lower RAM usage just remove 4GB of RAM and leave 4GB, then Windows 7 64-bit will use from 600-900MB of RAM.

And then you will be happy. And loose performance, but that isn't important, important is to have more memory sitting idle while HDD do the job. (according to you)

PS. Turn on Aero or your GPU will get cold virus.
