i am also trying to lower my ram useage as at the moment @ idle its 1.6GB where as my vista ultimate 32 runs @ 850MB even though i have 8GB of ram i think this is still too high. i have turned off indexing/search and aero and pen input is there anything else i can turn off ?

@ LogicEarth!
But seriously, I wouldn't fret over this issue.
Question: Are you using Windows 7 x64 at the moment? If you are, then you are utilising about 20% of your total memory of 8GB, as opposed to the 27% usage you had with Windows Vista 32-Bit.
If you are using a 32-Bit Windows 7, then you have a problem because your usage would be 53%, which sounds about right for a machine with 4GB. Yes, I say again, 53%, which is just over half you memory. If you are still using 32-Bit Windows, then you have 4GB of memory sitting there doing nothing, and unable to be used.
32-Bit operating systems CANNOT address more than 4GB of memory, and in most cases are internally limited to 3GB or so (as was the case with Windows XP and Vista 32 Bit).
If you want to be able to use all 8GB of memory, then you have to alternative but to install Windows Vista x64 or Windows 7 x64. If, for whatever reason you cannot (
drivers, perhaps?), then remove the unused 4GB of memory and sell it to one of your friends.
One other thing: You've actually hurt your system performance by turning off Aero. Aero uses the graphics acceleration hardware of your graphics card, freeing the CPU to do other tasks. With Aero off, your main CPU is doing all the graphics work, with minimal involvment from you graphics card.
