Comp will not start (black screen NO POST) Cd drive making odd noise.

I'll give anyone who reads this as much info as possible.

I have a desktop build that contains these parts:
    ASRock > N68-S UCC
    Rocketfish
200gb hdd (shows up as about 186 gb)
4 gb ddr ram (motherboard only supports ddr2)
Amd Phenom II 3.1GHZ dual core cpu
some sort of forward slot that has one usb 2.0 port with media card slots (sd card, micro sd, smart card ect)
a dvd (aka cd drive) by sony
nvidia gt 520 (silent model with a HUGE heatsink)
    550 watt psu

Here's the deal... The sound was not working. I would plug in headphones/speakers and no joy from any ports. NO sound what so ever. So I opened it up, and there is absolutely no reason why it would not be working except there is no cable for "hd audio" and that there's no cables on usb power 2 and some random "fan" all on the motherboard. I also found these weird connectors, as if a cable had been stripped from the cable connector. This is an older computer, I don't know its full history but it was very weird.

So I tried resetting the cables. Powered it back on, and no joy. The video was gone. Acer model 15" reports that there is no signal, and then goes to an amber light on the power light.

I'm afraid I have killed my motherboard. I took it out of the casing, did the bread setup and tried it with different ram and a brand new 350 watt PSU. No joy again. Tried clearing the CMOS... looked for obvious motherboard damage (found none) all parts in good condition* except for one thing.............. during my testing, a cord started to SMOKE. IT SMOKED. HEAVILY. I turned off the power and it was hot to the touch! BURNING to the touch! Wtf???????????????? That is why I tried a new PSU!

IS there anything that can be done to revive my poor, poor, dead desktop? Anything at all? I will never open up the insides of the computer again... of any computer ever again. But please, anyone, help me fix this desktop, if it is even possible.

ps: upon booting, the cd drive would make a weird noise every now and then. As if it was trying to read a disk.....when there was no disk inside of the tray to begin with.
I think the problem was that I shut the power off during the time it was booting by flipping the switch in the back. Have I shorted the MB? When I flipped the switch, the video WAS there. After that, it was gone.

    A couple of questions:
What cord started to smoke? Psu cord?
Where was the cord attached to the motherboard?
Did you ground yourself before messing inside the pc?
Have you tried just one stick of ram, cpu, power supply and no hard drive or cd drive? (just barebones) ?

Also please do not bump. It makes it look like you are already being helped.

Yes. Not the one that plugs into the wall, but the one that comes the other way outfrom the power supply. It was plugged into speaker.
    Yes i was grounded.
Yes, i have tried just a breadboard (barebones) no joy. Not even a single error beep (or beeps for that matter) and oh ok is there another way to bump? I could not find it in the thread tools.

3 days ago is not really needed for a bump. A bump is fine if it has been like a week without an answer IMO. Instead of bumping I would add things I have done since then.
    Its No problem.

    Anyways,
If the cord that fried was attached to the speaker (I think you mean motherboard speaker) if that is the case you would not here any beeps. This would make it incredibly hard to diagnose.

Take out the graphics card and look for dark marks there as well. Is their onboard video?
If so, could you try the onbaord video and see what happens?

But judging from the sound of it, your motherboard might be toast. I would try taking out all your ram and cpu and the motherboard. Look for dark marks everywhere.

Can you take any pics with a digital camera or cell phone & post them ?

But sounds like you fried something, MB or part of the PSU voltage

Oh ok, I'm used to different bump periods from where I come from. In the future I will do just that - adding things I have done.

Indeed it was the motherboard speaker (why else would it have "speaker" right above the connection) but there was no beeps even before I opened the computer up (someone forbid me from doing that ever again) So I wonder if it was faulty even before I made it into a giant brick. But yes it does make it very hard to diagnose D:

I took out the graphics card before I posted here and tried the onboard video. I even tried clearing the cmos, to restore default settings because it would probably still be set to use the PCI instead of onboard. I still get only a yellow signal. There's one thing I remembered that I could try - using the HDMI connector. I used the regular VGA connector. I doubt this would make a difference but I could try it and post back results?

I took everything apart and like I said in the above post, did a breadboard (the basics) I gave it a hard inspection and everything looked fine. No marks......nothing to indicate anything is burnt. It looks brand new, even! I'll take some pics, and report back.

Yes, but it restarted and rebooted just fine (posted, ect) + the hdd was taken out during the breadboarding test, so it wouldn't have anything to do with teh monitor not turning on, sadly
