Need help with hard drive repair, system is taking a long time to boot

In addition when it does boot I can't launch any programs which aren't part of the system (I can change desktop settings, search my hard drive, etc. but can't run things like Skype or chrome.) My laptop has been having a weird issue for a while where when it came out of sleep it would have this issue, but run fine in terms of speed. When I restarted it everything would run fine. Yesterday I was forced to do a hard shut-down after waking it up (was short on time and needed to catch a flight.) now when I start it my machine takes a long time to boot and won't run non-system related programs at all. I've tried using check disk in safe mode, but at the rate it was going it would have taken a week or more for something to happen. (I left it on 5 hours and it got through 4% reading bad files most of the way.) Now I've been running sart up repair for around four hours a it's been attempting disk repairs the whole time. Should I let it keep running, or should I try something else? (If so, what should I do?)

If after runing through Gregg`s steps and after a fresh install, if it`s still giving you problems, definitely go grab a new hard drive. They are dirt cheap nowadays.

Update: I let start up repair run, and now my machine is running fine, with the exception that non-system based programs won't produce any kind of sound. So if I run a sound test I get sound through the speakers/headset, but if I run something like pandora or chrome I can't get any sound. The application won't even show up on the volume mixer.

Type Troubleshoot in the Start Search box, run the Sound Playback troubleshooter.

If no joy update the Sound driver from Windows Update or the PC's Support Downloads webpage. Driver Install - Device Manager

If no newer driver reinstall the Sound driver by uninstalling in Device Manager, rebooting PC.

Sorry it took me so long to reply, and thanks for the help thus far. So in addition to sound not working on non system related programs I'm getting the "class not registered" error when I right click computer and hit "manage." The search function on my start menu is also not working, so I'm trying to do most of this using the command prompt.

It seems you have some corruption issues. Did you work through the steps in order in Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot?

If not I would run the Malwarebytes and your AV full scan now to check for infection. If there is interference use the boot AV scans given in the tutorial.

Once you have a clean system, run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker to check for damaged System Files.

Report back results.

Recycling a movie from my harddrive is taking long long time.
Why is this. Like 10 minutes plus and it still says recycling. It should only take a second. Is it bad to let it continue at its own pace or should I restart the PC and try it again?
