Missing or corrupted kernel (ntoskrnl.exe, 0xc00000e9)

Hi,

My laptop is suddenly showing the following error message:

Windows failed to start
File: \Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Status 0xc00000e9
Info: Windows failed to load because the kernel is missing, or corrupt.

I am able to boot using the recovery disc and have run several repairs but have not had any luck.
I also tried:
Code:
C:\> bootrec /ScanOS
C:\> bootrec /RebuildBCD
C:\> bootsect /nt60 C: /force
but the problem persists. Chkdsk does not report any bad sectors.

I also tried expanding the missing file from the recovery disc as described here:
"ntoskrnl.exe" BSOD
NTOSKRNL.EXE is missing or corrupt.

Code:
x:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32
but the error message reads "can't open file".

I'm stuck at the moment so any help appreciated.
