    RAM Installation not working

    Hello All;

    I recently purchased 4GB RAM from Crucial and tried to install it; after installation I dint find any change; I.E system is still showing 4GB were as it should show 8GB.

    My system:

    Win 7 home, 64 bit
    Dell Inspiron N5050

    Things I tried;

    1) Swapping the slots
    2) Checked the BIOS Version; it is updated
    However; I noticed if I install any of my RAM on the second slot; my laptop makes 2 beeps after I power on;;

    Does that mean my second slot is faulty? Please advise..

    Two beeps is "no memory detected". Which means it could be a memory module problem (defective or incorrect type) or a problem with the memory slot.

    You can try a BIOS (CMOS Memory) reset and see if that helps.

    Did you get the correct memory for this model? In many Dell's you can't mix memory or use certain brands. It mus be one vendor (Crucial is a good choice as the proper Crucial memory is guaranteed to work in Dell's).

    Does the original Dell Memory work in both slots?

    According to the Dell specs, this uses DDR3, 1300 or 1600 Mhz memory.

    Very good questions.. and now I definitely think it is the slot.. but need confirmation from you..

    The original RAM from Dell does not work in the second slot and gives beep.. and only work in first.. Crucial the same. works in first and second gives beep.. But if I try the CMOS reset from BIOS will it help?? Also since the second slot gives beep no matter which brand I install;will it be wise to buy another crucial one..?

    It does sound like the slot is bad. I don't think resetting the BIOS will help in this case.

    You may want to post this on the Dell community forum (Laptop hardware section) in case someone there has some additional suggests. http://en.community.dell.com/support...op/f/3518.aspx

    You could install a 4 or 8 GB memory module in the one that does work. Unfortunately you are not getting dual channel operation that way and only one memory slot does reduce CPU and system efficiency.

    If this is still under warranty, contact Dell to get it repaired. If not, you will need to decide if you want to buy a new (or refurbished) motherboard.

    You might try Dell support anyway as this bad memory slot likely was bad from the onset and how would you even know if it had a issue till you moved the ram or added same?

    Kill them with kindness is another tip along with having all the original purchase information handy.
