.GIFS Don't Show in Windows 7 Help screens and others

Recently I have noticed that the .gif and .jpeg icons for some buttons don't show when I bring up a program, like OneNote Help. There are buttons to "Show All" or "Hide All" as part of Windows 7 help and they used to display. The name of the button shows but the button icon actually appears as a broken image. (I have included an example below.)

I was hoping that someone might know why this is happening. It also happens on the initial screen for games that I have installed (usually the "Click to Play" button shows but now it does not).

The buttons still work, but it looks crappy.

Thank you very much.

Hello Cconnet,

Do you have Internet Explorer set as the default program for .gif files?

Default Programs - Associate a File Type or Protocol

Hope this helps,

Yes, the .GIF files are associated with Internet Explorer and the .jpegs (another one that does not always show) are associated with Windows Photo Viewer. (I haven't made any changes to any of these, that I know of.)

Thank you!

Ok. You may have an issue with the registry entries for .gif files. See if downloading and merging the .reg file for the listed gif option in the tutorial below may be able to help after a restart. It will restore the default associations and registry entries for .gif files.

Okay, I tried downloading and merging the .reg file for gifs and jpegs.

Unfortunately, it made no difference.

Any other ideas?

Thank you.

Hope this is the right section, but..... is there a way to get Windows Photo Viewer to play a GIF animation? The XP photo viewer had no problems with this, and i dont understand why microsoft didn't implement it in 7's version (unless they did, and im just stupid).
