Installing XP on a computer designed for Windows 8 is likely to be a serious challenge and one that may eventually prove futile. One issue, but not the only one, is the probable lack of XP compatible drivers. Manufacturers find it increasingly difficult to justify the considerable effort required to create drivers for what it essentially an obsolete OS. Also understand that Microsoft support for XP will end in April 2014. That means no more security updates and that will put your computer at risk.

Windows could probably be installed with little trouble but there could be issues here as well.

In both cases you would a legal copy of he OS.

Unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise it is best to stay with Windows 8.

How long has your mom had the PC and where did she buy it from? A mate of mine bought one from PC World and took it back after two weeks as he couldn't stand Windows 8. That may be an option?

You can make Windows 8 a lot like XP/Vista/Windows 7 by adding a Start Menu via Classic Shell (free) or Start8 ($4.99) or some other program. I use both on different computers running Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 Preview.

You can also disable UAC, the nagging, annoying "ARE YOU REALLY SURE YOU WANT TO DO THIS" window you get all the time. Use the registry edit method to completely disable UAC. This will also disable all the Metro/Modern stuff.

Another issue with new computers being downgraded to Win XP is that XP doesn't support 4K/512e sector disks automatically like newer versions of windows. If you install XP on a 4K/512e sector disk, you may need a utility to align the partition.

Check for 4K sector disk issues on any new install of Win XP. If installing Win XP on the newer format disks, check with the disk manufacturer for guidance. For Seagate disks, you need to contact tech support and request the utility.

Once you upgrade to Win 7, you will forget about XP for the most part.
