"Waiting for Background Program to Close" shows no actual programs?!

Hey everyone,

Recently, I have noticed that every time I properly shut down my laptop, I keep getting the pop up saying "Waiting for Background Program to Close."

The box doesn't even list the program that needs to close. (Can this be a virus)
Furthermore, if I wait a few seconds, it will shut down automatically, I don't need to click "Force Close"....

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Could be a program or service hanging. Establish a Clean Boot, run SFC /SCANNOW Command
to check system files for corruption, check the logs including Performance log for errors at shutdown, utilize System Resources to check for Solutions to problems and Generate a System Health Report, and the rest of the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

I already ran SFC /SCANNOW and no errors was present.
How can I check the logs for performance during shut down?

Each of those recommended steps are in Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 so complete them first, then the other steps if necessary.

In my opinion this message is totally normal. Just wait until the system closes down.

I had this problem with the latest update for my Logitech Trackman Wheel mouse, which only happened when smooth scrolling for Chrome was operating. Disabling that fixed the slow shut down.
The smooth scrolling was nice but not having it doesn't concern me as it is the same as it always was. Apparently it runs in the background.
You do also need to open "System Configuration" & disable it in the "Startup" as well.

This is normal and is an update in Windows 7

Don't worry about it, loads of system services need to shut down. If you want to see what is running just click CTRL + SHIFT + ESC to open task manager and click the Processes tab.

I had this problem for over a year. I researched it and found that Windows was simply waiting for my anti-virus software to shut down.

UPDATE 10 October 2013: .This problem stopped after Avira had an auto-update with 199 new files on Sunday 5 October 2013.
