A Problem Shutting Down After Wake-up From Sleep

I am running Windows 7 Professional x64, on a Hewlett Packard 8200 Elite SFF machine. I recently had a new motherboard installed (last one was burnt out), so I believe my problem is in Windows.

After several weeks of observation, I have found when the OS sleeps, regardless of whether I initiate the sleep or the OS does, I cannot shut the system down cleanly, i.e. it shuts down and after the fans go off (about 3-5 seconds later), the system restarts.

The restart from this error is not complete. In that, I mean it is only a partial boot and the cursor ends up in the left hand corner flashing. I can then hit <Cntl><Alt><Delete> to reboot and then do a shutdown, which shuts the system down cleanly.

I have also found if I restart the system at any time after it sleeps, the OS will cleanly shut down; otherwise I get the shutdown error.

    Any ideas?

I would suggest checking to see if there are any bios updates available for your board.
You could also try setting the bios settings to default, as well as the power settings in windows.

Power Plan - Restore Default Settings

You can check HP's website for updates.

@andrew129 . . . Thanks, I will check for BIOS updates at HP. That is a good idea. As far as the power plan goes, I do like the computer to sleep and I can continue to leave sleep in the plan as long as I reboot before shutting it down.
As I wrote, I'm not sure if it's hardware related, but I will check for Bios updates.
    Thanks!

No problem. I was simply suggesting to reset the plans and then choose your settings again. I was not suggesting you have to leave them at the defaults.

Sleep is largely dependent upon the Display driver, so in addition I'd try auto-updating the driver in Device Manager after enabling Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3) . While you're at it Check for Updates and install all Important and Optional with reboots until no more are offered. A performance Update or driver may be there which is needed.

If no newer driver try the latest from the PC's or device's Support Downloads webpage.

You can test Sleep by setting it to 1 minute in Power Options, then Hibernate to 2 minutes. I like Hibernate because it keeps no power to RAM, saves everything on the desktop to shut down, yet starts up twice as fast.

Then work through these solutions for Sleep Mode Problems.

YOu can go over your install most thoroughly using these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

If nothing resolves your issue you can determine with certainty the cause by Gathering a Startup, Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, or Reboot Trace - Windows 7 Forums
