How Do I Intall Hosts File?

Hello,

I recently purchased a new desktop (Windows 7, IE10, 32 Bit). I downloaded the Hosts File (in zip) software to my desktop. How do I implement it?

Thanks,
Anne Burns

Hi Anne,

Where did you download a HOSTS file from and why?
Windows has a "default" HOSTS file, so you are trying to replace that file for some reason.
If some program you are using needs a modified HOSTS file, they should have instructions how to use it.

The only time I've used a downloaded HOSTS file on a Home PC was for using/testing a special "security" HOSTS file that prevented access to known malicious sites.
The vendor for the HOSTS file included the installation utility, and documented how to use it and what the HOSTS file does.

Hello DW7,

I'm glad you like my cat. Show me a good mouser and I'll show you a cat with bad breath. Badda bing (mischievous grin)

I put Hosts on my Windows 7 laptop and it works beautiful. I deleted the Hosts file from this desktop machine. If you will be so kind as to give me a list of instructions to carry out to rid myself of ALL banners and popups I will be extremely grateful.

Hosts file ignored and replaced with hosts.original
Hello. I am trying to use the hosts file. However both pings and web addresses still bypass the hosts file. I noticed that there is another file in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc directory called 'hosts.original'. When ever I delete this file, it reappears seconds later. I have made sure that...

Hosts File
Hey, I was wondering, is there any internet performance gain if you put a commonly used website's IP (like Google) in your Hosts file, so it doesn't need to ask a DNS server? I mean, because I have 30 websites I go on at least 10 times each day, and it lags when I open all of them :D Thanks!

Hosts file-S??
can the hosts file be changed to, or amended by, another file? IOW can there be a file named xyz that essentially replaces the hosts file, or adds entries to it? Possibly by a registry key or configuration setting? Of course it could by altering library fxns, but by other "simpler" means? ...
