Tray area with blank icons - what's causing it?

My question is not how to fix this, but what's causing it? It's not uncommon for me to see this on workstations / laptops. I'm aware of how to fix it. I have a batch file I found on this forum that works like a charm. Does anyone have a clue as to what causes this? In the example below you can see where your network icon would be there is instead a hole, as well as several places in the "reveal more icons" area. Ive seen this box get huge before all full of blanks.

    Hello diplo,

It may be corruption, but it could be anything that causes it. Resetting the notification area icons to clear the corruption should help.

    Hope this helps, :)
