cannot determine/repair startup issue or use external restore points'

I left my zen (music player) in usb port charging and computer system ran updates back in june. Since then cannot startup system, indicates it thinks is driver issue but the startup repair cannot fix.
The startup diagnosis/repair and system overview are listed below. I spent days working on it after it happened, then I moved and now trying to work on again. I have restore points on external drive but could not get system recovery to recognize them. I know I played around trying to get restore to work, unfortunately can't remember everything I did back then.
I have a blank external drive and my new plan was to put operating system on external drive to boot up and repair but online info says cannot put win 7 operating system on external drive. Appreciate any suggestions to try at this point.

System/operating system: dell dimension xps410 with win 7 ultimate 32bit full version.

    The diagnosis indicates:
    system disk = \device\harddisk0
    windows directory = c:\windows
    autoChk Run =0
number of root causes = 1

the following tests performed and completed successfully with no error codes:
updates, system disk test, disk failure diagnosis, disk metadata test, target OS test, volume content check, boot manager diagnosis, system boot log diagnosis,, event log diagnosis, internal state check, boot status test, setup state check, registry hives check, windows boot log diagnosis, bugcheck analysis, access control test, file system test (chkdsk), software installation log diagnosis,

    Root Cause found:
a recent driver installation or upgrade may be preventing the system from starting.
repair action: system file integrity check and repair
    result: failed error code - 0 x 2

more tests ran with no error after the above root message (tests included in above list) and then it says startup repair has tried several times but still cannot determine the cause of the problem.

Boot into System Recovery Options to System Restore to before the problem happened.

If that fails to start it then run SFC /SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot from the Command Line in the Recovery Options list.

Report back results. If these fail then you'll need to start at the top of the steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start which try everything possible leading up to if necessary rescuiing any files to run Dell Windows 7 PC Restore or do the superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

    Code:
    sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows
    works? If so:

    Code:

    set WINDOWS_TRACING_LOGFILE=C:\CBS.log
    sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows
Copy C:\CBS.log to usb stick, put usb stick in working machine. Now post CBS.LOG on forum. Most likely you must zip it first.
After posting you may delete C:\CBS.log
