I have used Windows 8 since the first trial pre-versions were out. I thought it was kind of fun and I even made about a dozen little tutorials about those early versions.

When MS offered the RTM version for $40, I installed it in a virtual partition and eventually upgraded that to 8.1. It is still fun for playing around with it but I would not use it for my daily work. I still run my 6 PCs with Windows 7 and Vista. And I have a little stack of Windows 7 OEM licenses in case I have to buy a new PC (one of the Vista laptops seems to be on it's last breath).

And then there is always Linux. I run a lot under Mint Mate and find that more convenient than Windows 8.1.

LOL! While I understand that you live in two places and have a wife, you still make me look cheap. I just have the one desktop and a little 15" notebook. I also have one Win 7 Ultimate retail license and one Win 7 Home Premium retail license I haven't used yet. The desktop has another Ultimate retail license so it could be used on another machine without having to beg, plead, cajole, and/or lie to M$ to move it to another machine.

LF, it is actuall very similar for us.

In Germany I have 1 desktop for myself and 1 laptop (Vista) for the wife.

In Florida I have 1 desktop for myself and 2 laptops for the wife. One of those laptops is dedicated to control a Silhouette Portrait paper cutting machines for her crafts. That dedicated laptop I sometimes use also for teaching at the computer club. It's a nice Toshiba with an i5, 6GBs of RAM and a Vertex II SSD.

In NY we have 1 laptop (Vista). But we are not too often in NY.

Then, of course, I run a bunch of virtual systems (Linux and Windows 8.1) on my desktops - ususally from a USB3 attached SSD.

Well, you mentioned that you are a gamer...

You can play Xbox stuff on Windows 8, so if you have an XBOX and Windows 8, you can connect the accounts. I'm sticking to Win. 7 (hate the whole Metro thing) but do whatever you want to.

XP's support is ending in April 2014.

Windows 7 - upgrade or not upgrade?
