how do I enable hidden administrator (not built-in) account on log-on?

Hi Geeks,

I tried to hide a standard user account from appearing on log-on screen through registry editor, with help obtained from internet. But i accidentally left a new key (without renaming) in SpecialAccount>UserList. When I switched user, only the standard user account is shown. The Switch User button is also not there. Ctrl+Alt+Del also don't work.

So I logged on to the standard user account to troubleshoot the problem. User Account Control dialog box opens. But there is no box to enter administrative password.

How do I enable administrator (designate) account on log-on screen in these scenario?

Kindly help.

Thank You!

Hi Andrew,

Pleasure to receive your quick reply. Could you please explain how to "enable from WinRE" to this layman?

Hello JaiJai, and welcome to Seven Forums.

That would be from the Windows recovery environment. The tutorial link posted above can help show more on how to.

Hi guys,

"Built-in Administrator - Enable from WinRE" Method 1 doesn't work, because system is 64-bit; by Method 2 - C:\Windows\System32\Config folder cannot be accessed. Access is denied.

(Note: in User Account Control dialog window, no box to type administrative password, and 'yes' button is insensitive.)

What do I have to do further?

You might see if you may be able to enable the built-in Administrator while in Safe Mode.

Sorry Administrator,

Access is denied. Nothing worked as per the guidelines.

I might not be representing the problem correctly in words or troubleshooting properly.

I did F11. Of course, files are lost.

Anyway, thanks for you and SevenForums group for great support.

Best wishes for the group!

Looks like you may need to reinstall Windows then.
