System 32 repair (has been deleted)

Hey guys, i never thought i would come here for this issue but theres a first time for everything.

Anyways, a friend of mine has a 4 year old or so toshiba laptop with windows vista. In the process of cleaning it up he had deleted the folder system 32. Now he wants to give it to his sister but he wants to get some stuff off it before he got someone to wipe it clean (me)

So i was wondering about 2 things in mid
    1. Upgrading a laptop to windows 7, would find most drivers even for laptops correct?
2.What would be the best way to get what he wants off the hard drive (movies music etc)
proposed solutions i have been given already are
-restoring system 32 via system repair or command line via disc
    - use a laptop hdd adapter usb, plug into a pc and copy files from the HDD to another HDD

In my opinion, there are too many unknowns about your situation for us to be able to tell you "the best" way to get the files off of this old laptop. For instance, we don't know if you are comfortable taking the hard drive out of the laptop. I tend to take the drive out and copy data off using an adapter tool like this: Vantec 2.5"/3.5"/5.25" SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter - Model CB-ISATAU2 - Newegg.com

While the data is being copied, I clean the inside of the laptop and the screen.

If you don't want to pull the drive out, then download/create Kaspersky's Rescue Disk. Then boot to that and copy the files of interest. You might as well scan the files for infections. That should give you a second opinion about how clean they are.

You would need to tell us the Toshiba model number for us to tell you if W7 drivers are available for it. Also, how much RAM does it have in it.... and what it the CPU?

Ill let you know when he rings me, he was at work while he told me this (he works at eb games soo yeah)
i think itll probs have 1-2gb ram though, i wouldn't mind taking the HDD out but the kasperskys rescue disk might be the better option first
