Viewing Downloads

hi
can anybody please help a novice,
when I download anything from the net,( instructions manuels etc) the windows media center
automatically opens up,which indicates they are there, but they are not.
is there anyway that I can direct them to download in adobe reader, without me first
having to save them in my documents, then open them in adobe.
Thanks
