Disc Volume error caused issues, now can not start-up- should install?

A few days ago my computer started having a ton of issues which I discovered had something to do with a disc volume error. chkdsk could not fix it, tried downloading an online program to fix it and now windows won't start. Its been stuck in startup repair for a while. I have been advised to reinstall windows 7, but I do not have a reinstallation/repair disc. So now I need to go buy one rather than wait a few weeks for the manufacturer.

I've been thinking of upgrading to windows 8 for some time now. My question is, will I be able to buy windows 8 and install it without trouble, and if so, how would I do that?

    Any help appreciated.
