I setup a separate page file many years ago when I first started multibooting with multiple HDDs, until recently I had other OS's on the HDD and tried to keep the Pagefile on a separate HDD, these are now history and as you say the current Pagefile serves no useful purpose as configured. I am now getting to grips with virtual machines rather than multi-booting, I do keep a Ubuntu 13.04 OS on a 32Gb USB 3 stick for emergencies.

    Hi toolman59,

I am shooting in the dark, hoping to hit the target somehow. That way I won't be crestfallen.

Download and run HDD Lowlevel Format Tool version 4.4 -Windows Executable (works without installation) - from HDDGURU: HDD LLF Low Level Format Tool and low level format the calcitrant HDD. Do a full format. Be careful to select the correct drive. If LL Format is successful, then try regular format with Windows. Needless to say, doing that doing LLF you will lose all data on that drive.

It is always a good idea to have a few Linux distros for emergencies. My preferred stick is this one - and it fits even on a 1GB stick.

Emergency Kit - save your files from a dead OS

But I also run a whole selection of Linux distros and Windows 8 in VMware Player - some from an external SSD.

Portable OS - Carry your OS on an External Drive

    Weird

I always use GParted to format my HDDs and I have never experienced this issue.

"Disk 0" appears in your screenshot, can you set a partition drive letter?

Can you perform a disc check in Windows or Ubuntu?

Have you made a bootable partition wizard cd ? It never fails.

Thank you all for your advice, I have installed a dual boot of Win 7 on the SSD, Disk Management works perfectly in the new installation. It is obvious that Disk Management is corrupted in the first installation, I think this must have happened during the uninstall of Win 8 Preview which seemed to have its hooks into a lot of places in the Disk system.
From now on any previews or applications will be tried in VirtualBox. Although I have overcome my problem, I have not been able to establish what is precisely amiss in the first installation.
