PC Rolled Back after updates failures, Errors: 800F0826, 800700B7

My PC is a HP Desktop. Win 7 Home Premium SP1. Motherboard: Pegatron IPISB-CU (Carmel2), Chipset:Intel H61. Processor:Intel Core i3-2130. Memory 8GB. Hard Drive 1.5 TB. The PC is two years old and has 484GB of information on it.

After downloading the Microsoft updates and my PC re-started, all of it's files, folders, photos, e-mail messages,and many of my programs were no longer available! It appears that the PC was thinking it was a brand new installation. Even my main AntiVirus program (Avast Internet Security) said '"welcome" . Also, many of my desktop icons were missing as well as being all set up on the left side of the screen. After re-starting a few times, it finally started up correctly but I then noticed that the updates did not update. Error codes were; 800f0826 (update failed to install and is preventing installation of additional updates) and 8024200d (update did not finish downloading or installing). After another update error 800700B7 appeared. After re-installing these updates, using recommendations as per the error codes, the PC on re-start was once again acting as a new machine and the updates had failed again. These re-starts would sometimes be ok (everything on my PC as they should be) and sometimes not (acting as a brand new PC installation).


I restored the system to before the updates were installed. Did not help. After re-installing the updates the same problems as before (as described previously).

I ran the Avast Boot Time scan. Found no Virus or Malware.
I ran a MalwareBytes Pro scan. No malware found.
I ran Kapersky TDSSKILLER. No problems found.
I ran a Spybot S&D scan as well as their RootKit scan. No problems.
I ran Old Timers OTL scan.. No problems.


I ran SFCSCANNOW and it said it found problems and would fix on restart. It didn't seem to help.
I also ran CHKDSK C: /F/R . Don't remember anything of any significance.

I installed and ran SURT. That did nothing either. Ran SURT again and PC opened as it is supposed to and all my files, folders etc were there. Tried to install 18 updates and all but two failed!.

For some reason, after the updates were 'installed' the system sometimes can't determine if it's a new install or one that was installed two years ago and it can't do all the updates either.


I have tried to attach the zipped CBS log (13.4MB) twice, but the server had an error500 - internal server error. There is a problem with the resource you are looking for and it cannot be displayed).

Is this factory preinstalled Win7 which especially with HP is the worst possible install one can have of Win7, larded with bloatware and useless duplicate utilities which interfere with better versions built into Win7?

That's why most tech enthusiasts will not run such an install but instead Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. Everything is provided in the blue link tutorial.

In the time it would take to troubleshoot the Updates and after all you've tried, you'd be up and running with a perfect install.

On HP's there's also a Minimal recovery option on some recent models when you run HP System Recovery so you can boot into that to see if it's possible after doing the preliminary steps for the reinstall, then if its not available during the booted Custom install delete all partitions to create and format new as desired using the Drive options pictured in Clean Install Windows 7

Thank you for your expeditious response. I removed all of the OEM bloatware when I first set up the PC. I didn't do a clean re-install because I was unaware of how to do so at the time. Also, a few years back when another PC's hard drive crashed, transferring all my files, folders and pictures etc was fairly easy except I had a real time consuming job of transferring all my e-mails and identities from my Incredimail e-mail program to the new PC. So what I had done, is make an image in case of hard drive failure.

Having said that, I think I have a Microsoft update problem and not a hard drive problem. All I want to do is figure out why the updates do not update and why since doing the 'updates', upon start up the PC sometimes is rolled back to a new install with almost all my resources seemingly lost.

Recently, whenever I do the updates a message says they were successfully completed but when they are being installed a message says "preparing to configure windows" then another "failure configuring updates, reverting changes. preparing to retry". I then find out that they did not install..So, clearly something isn't working correctly and I'm hoping someone can figure this out.

The zipped CBS log (13.4MB) I tried to send is too large to send so I understand. 4 out of the 5 Cbs persist files are small enough to upload but are in cab format and cannot upload. I will attach the notepad check sur log, check sur persist log and filter list files. Hope these help.

Yes, re-booting a few sometimes clears up a problem. However, I have never had so many problems until the last updates, associated with what is supposed to be an easy thing - updates. Especially when it changes my system. I have done some installs in batches such as all the updates for Office 2007 and they all installed ok and were not in need of re-installing.

As to my e-mail program, I happen to think Incredimail obsolete or not, is just that, Incredible. I have tried others. Yahoo mail is the absolute worst! Unfortunately, the Incredimail backup program stinks. I had to use an XP workaround to retrieve all my contacts etc. A major time consuming project. That is the main reason other than having to have to re-install all my 193 programs, that I make an image on an external drive for just in case of hard drive failure.

I will as you suggested install them one at a time. Currently, my PC is ok? but still needing those updates that failed. We'll see how doing them one at a time works out and after the re-start, I hope my PC isn't screwed up again.

You say the info I posted is grossly incomplete and referred me to the posting instructions. I followed those instructions. 1. I used the SURT tool and ran it three times. 2. SFC Scan. I ran that as well as Chkdsk/F/C:. 3. Windows update error codes: I supplied those as well. 4. Log collection. I collected them but the zipped CBS file was too large to upload. I did however upload what I could., The cab files are in a format that says they can't be uploaded. 5. Lastly, I started a new thread. So, please let me know what I missed that I could have done and I will do as best I can and do so.

As I had mentioned,the zipped file was unable to be attached because of an error (see attached error code) and it may have been too large at 13.4MB (Max size: zip 8.00 MB) (see attached snip). I don't recall requesting which patches were failing but I did include the error codes. The first one to fail KB915597 was on 11/18/13. The 2nd thru 15th on 11/24/13. If you need a list of those KB's I will supply them.

I have also noticed that 'new' updates are posted today as available but that they were previously installed successfully on 10/9/13. Why they show as needing to be installed I do not know. Can't Microsoft's software pick that up? It appears that some of the past failures may be attributed to the fact they were previously successfully installed.

Even if the updates fail to install, why should that affect my PC in such a way as to seemingly erase all files,folders,photos,videos and even delete all of Firefox's history and render it as a brand new install? sometimes the PC starts as it should with all two years and 488GB of files, folders etc and at other times as a new install? In 2 plus years, I never had this problem before until the update failures that started on 1/18/13.
