system interrupts while transferring to external

Hi everyone, first time posting on these boards. Anyway, I just installed windows 7 hp last night and have run into a rather annoying problem concerning transferring files to my external hard drive. Whenever I try to move a file to my hitachi simpledrive, I immediately start having 100% cpu usage. I've tried using resources management to figure out what is going on and the best thing i can come up with is that "system interrupts" immediately starts up and proceeds to slow my computer to a halt. To the best of my knowledge I dont have this problem while running my comp until said scenario. Anyone else encounter this sort of problem and does anyone know any fixes? Any help would greatly be appreciated

Actually, the fact that it's "interrupts" is a vitally important find.

Try updating your BIOS and chipset drivers, if possible. Also, if you can change the connection type - use a firewire or eSATA connection instead of USB, or vice versa - the problem most likely won't manifest itself anymore.
