Weird laptop display issue

This is an issue my co-worker just asked me about on his personal Dell laptop, which is 2-3 months shy of being 2 years old.

It has Win7 Home Premium, 64-bit, Core i5 processor, and 6 GB RAM.

He said it did this several months ago, when the original battery started wearing out, but then it sort of "fixed" itself. He used the machine for several months with no battery, then just got a new battery this week. Now out of the blue last night and today it started doing this again with the top half of the display.

He said sometimes it will go several hours before it happens, sometimes only 10 minutes. Today it was doing it without the battery installed at all. His thought was maybe heat related? The skewed graphics on the top half of the screen were moving slightly (it wasn't totally static), so I'm thinking there must be a problem with the physical conductors carrying the signal from the CPU/mobo to the LCD display in the lid. Thoughts?

Wondering if it does that with an external monitor. Could be a driver issue.

Hi PatrickGSR94,

It could be an issue with the LCD or Graphic card on the system. Kindly connect it to an external monitor and check if distortion happens there as well.

If it happens on the system only and not on the external monitor you should reseat the LDVS cable to ensure it is connected properly.

Let me know the model number for the system so I can provide the manual for the same. Keep us posted with the results so we can advise you further.

The laptop is still under warranty so he got on the phone with Dell and somehow they determined the mother board to be failing. They're sending a tech to replace it so we'll see if that fixes the issue. Being an intermittent issue I suppose only time will tell.

Hi PatrickGSR94,

Its great to hear that we are replacing the motherboard for this issue. I am sure it would be helpful in resolving this issue.

Weird laptop display problems
I have a Sony Vaio laptop from a friend. It has a weird display problem. The colours are all wrong - pinks, blues greens, text is indistinct, swirly coloured lines prevent the screen content being read easily. If I connect an external monitor, the display on that is fine. This suggests that the...

Weird display problem
This happens regularly on my Dell Latitude D630 running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 32-bit. This is a fresh install not an upgrade. The icons return to normal by simply passing the mouse over them but the desktop stays the same until I reboot. See screen shot attached.
