cant find username in windows.old

so my wife got some kind of virus or something on our old laptop which had vista, turn it on and it would say windows can't start. So we bought another laptop. I wanted to get it going again that way my daughter could watch her mickey on it, so I did some reading and got a windows 7 disc and installed it, works great. I was reading some more and found that the old files are still on there. I says awesome, I had some pics and stuff that I never saved. well I found the windows.old file but my user name isnt there, and all the pics and vids are default ones, but there is a lot of space taken up by the old files. I downloaded recuva and it said a lot of the files are unrecoverable, but I have NO idea what files it was showing. any ideas??
