Indexing and Searching broken

I touched on this earlier in the thread, and we've reached the point where I can ask: How attached are you to the homegroup as it is set up now. (I know you said it's not working) Could you leave the homegroup?

Do you still think I should go and turn off the Windows Search service
We can put it back and perhaps correct the issue of why it isn't working along the way.
There are some good tutorials on Sevenforums, a few are about homegroups.

I'm wondering if the two issues aren't related.

I have turned off homegroup sharing on my computer and left. I am no longer a member of the homegroup.

Network sharing is accomplished by turning on share on individual folders. I have turned off the network sharing on all of the folders that had.

So I can no longer be seen in the homegroup and I can no longer be seen sharing folders over the network.

I have rebuilt the index and it still shows 0 files indexed. The searches do not work.

I did have home group working and I am sure that I could get that started again. I think the sharing of files through the Network works better than homegroup anyway.

I had asked you to stop the Windows Search Svc in post 65

Check Services

If Windows Search is stopped, start it
Any change to the Indexing Options screen?

• If the number of items is increasing, let it cook until it says Indexing Complete
  
  • Test Search in the Start Menu search box - any results?
    
    • Yes? Search is working, we can start putting things back together one piece at a time keeping an eye on how it affects search.
    • No? Rebuild the Index, wait until it says Indexing Complete
      and test search again.

If it is already started, then restart your machine
You'll need to stop Windows Search for the next step
See post# 65 (below the fold) for those instructions

In Explorer, navigate to
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft
rename the Search folder to _xSearch
then start the Windows Search Svc (click Start instead of stop in post# 65 instructions)

That's good for now, I'll read your next status post

Search will create the folder in ProgramData, set the proper access, and should build the underlying structure.

You can look in the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search folder to see if there's anything there.

Well I think that I may have screwed up!

I did this last evening (search didn't work) and because I was looking in the wrong place I thought that _xSearch had not been created. (It had)

So this morning I tried to create it again. It said the folder already existed.

Anyway there is still no joy with the search. When I look at the directory structure under _xSearch, the structure looks correct, however, it doesn't look to me that the indexing data is being loaded there. So should I delete _xSearch and all of children and try again? (the indexing thing has been run at least twice since I created _xSearch).

I think you're alright, no harm.

Let's forget about _xSearch, I might need to compare some properties, so leave it just sit there.

Is there a Search folder in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft?
edit: No is ok, yes is ok too.

I've been looking at the system logs you sent before and saw something I either forgot about or missed before. The process below will give me more information and it might find some things to fix.

Follow OPTION TWO and OPTION THREE in this tutorial: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
SFC /scannow

When you're done let me know if SFC found any integrity errors (displayed in the Command Prompt window) or if it did not.
Also, please attach sfcdetails.txt from OPTION THREE to your next post
