File not showing up in folder, but showing up in Remove Empty Directori

I am trying to remove empty folders using Remove Empty Directories. I know of a few that are empty, and just ran a test to see if RED would detect they were empty. Well, to my surprise, I am finding that RED shows 1 (or more) file in these folders (a JPG at 0.00 MB), but it's not showing up in the folder. Is there any way I can have these show up in folders so I can search for all JPG's and delete them? Example:

I do have "Show hidden files, folders and drives" checked under folder options as well.

    Suggestion

    Hi,

You could try running JPG Cleaner v2.6

I use this software on a regular basis. I'd suggest limiting it's use to only one problem folder on your machine as a test run.

Run the program with admin rights then from the GUI choose Add Folder then browse to your test folder. Additionally choose the option to delete Unknown Files and also untick the option to Create Backup Files.

File not showing up in folder, but showing up in Remove Empty Directori-jpg-cleaner-95-v2.jpg

Then choose Start and when the cleanup is completed there is an option to save a log file. Save the log file somewhere and have a look at it to view the results.

Additionally you could run the program again choosing the Delete Corrupt Files option.

If you're happy with the results - go ahead and add the other remaining folders or directories to be cleaned.

I've never encountered any problems using this software but as always before running any sort of cleaning product it's best to at least create a system restore point to fall back on and ideally have a system image backup handy.

    I keep getting this message:

    Processed 2 file(s), 0 of them cleaned, 0 error(s).
    Cleaned total of 0 byte(s) in 0:00:00."

I don't want them cleaned though, I want them gone.

Hi again, the idea was that if the files are corrupt or unknown then JPGCLN95 would remove them - not clean them.

Anyway, since it detected them as clean they must be valid .jpg files.

If you click on the file in the Remove Empty Directories results window what do you see?

I suppose that you could let RED do it's job and remove the empty folders - not sure why you want to keep an empty folder that contains a problem file.

What happens if you copy any available JPEG image from your hard drive to your desktop then rename the image to AlbumArtSmall.jpg then attempt to copy it into that folder? Do you get a message about replacing the file?

Also what does Portable GetFoldersize 2.5.24 report on the folder sizes if you point it at your My Music directory?

I know that you said that you've got hidden files set to show - but Windows 7 has folder template discovery enabled by default (chooses settings per type of folder rather than applying the same settings to every folder) and when you apply those settings they might only get applied to folders of the same type so you really need to navigate to the My Music folder - typically it's:

    C:\My Music

Then click - Organize > Folder Options > View > Show hidden files

    Then Apply to Folders

Crap, sorry, I'm saying the wrong program. I am using Folder Size to find out how many files there are in a folder. It's showing one, which is why RED isn't detecting it as empty, even though when looking at it in Explorer there is no file. When I copy another JPG with the same name, it does ask me if I want to replace the existing file (even though I can't see it). Portable GetFolderSize found it as well, viewing properties shows me this:

Why would "hidden" be checked? I've changed the entire music folder to show hidden files. Would it matter that I have the path as "Libraries\Music" instead of just under "C:\Music"? Is having it in the Libraries folder messing it up for some reason?

    Suggested reading material

    Hi again,

it seems that there's a problem with Windows 7 and album art and that it hides these files. I never knew that!

Anyway you might find a possible solution if you read this thread:

Hidden Files in Music Folders | Windows Secrets Lounge

I can't say if it works as I don't have the same problem myself.

And there's no problem with C:\Music vs Libraries/Music but folder options should be applied to C:Music.

And we have success. Currently processing now, it's amazing how many JPGs are popping up. Thanks for the help, looks like the solution will work.
